The Parliamentary and Scientific Committee A guide to Science in Parliament and Government: 2007A Publication of the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee Science in Government - Structures and functions Council for Science and Technology The Council for Science and Technology (CST) is the UK government's top-level advisory body on science and technology policy issues. The CST advises the Prime Minister and the First Ministers of Scotland and Wales on medium to long-term issues that cut across the responsibilities of individual government departments. The Government Office of Science within the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills supports the CST. CST organises its work around the following broad themes:
The 17 members of the Council are respected senior figures from across science, engineering and technology and are appointed by the Prime Minister. The Council has two Chairs, each with a distinctive role. One co-chair is elected from among its members, chairing any meeting where CST discuss and develops advice for government. The Government Chief Scientific Adviser chairs those meetings where CST is reporting its advice to government. The CST work programme is developed by its members in discussion with government. Advice may be delivered to government by published reports, confidential written advice, and discussions with ministers, officials and special advisers
