Department for Transport

The Department for Transport (DfT) is responsible for the delivery of a reliable, safe and secure transport system that responds to the needs of individuals and businesses while safeguarding the environment. The DfT is led by the Secretary of State for Transport, a Minister of State and two Parliamentary Under Secretary's of State. The Minister of State is supported by a Chief Scientific Adviser, who in turn is supported by the Research and Technology Strategy Division (RTS).

The RTS Division:

  • Provide central, strategic guidance on Research Programme Management.
  • Represents DfT interests in Government Science, Engineering and Technology policy.
  • Coordinates research needs across the department.
  • Links Research Programmes with national and international programmes.
  • Organise scientific advice in new policy areas and techniques.
  • Work to integrate research into DfT strategy for evidence based policy.
  • Develop the roles of science professionals within DfT.
