On 8th December 2011, fortysix mining quizzers packed the upstairs of the Counting House to dredge up or excavate from the hidden lodes of knowledge in their brains the answers to the wide ranging questions set by Nick Eastwood, question master and MinSouth President.
The quiz was split into 4 sections (Geology, Mining, Processing and General) plus a picture section on recognition of mines around the world. The end result was very close and the scoring produced discussion of validity of some answers, which was all resolved amicably with much banter.
The winners , pictured above with Nick Eastwood, were the "Norway Azerbaijan Alliance" team of Tor Falck (Norwegian), John Monhemius (involved in projects in Azerbaijan), Michael Forrest and Gavin Bowyer, who won sets of cigarette cards depicting mining vignettes dating from 1915.
The runners up were a team of similarly experienced "old timers" Alan Baxter, Tony Brewis, Mike Brooks and Geoff Hooper who received copies of "Mining and Geology for Fund Managers, Bankers and other Idiots" a humorous look at mining finance by Mark Tyler of NedBank. The team with the lowest score received mineral specimens kindly donated by Nick. A raffle of a framed Cornish mining print raised £65 towards the MinSouth educational funds. The evening was generously sponsored by Micromine and has whetted the appetites for a rematch in December 2012.
