On 9th June, MinSouth’s 2010-11 season of evening London lectures finished with the latest in its series of annual prestige lectures.
Over ninety members and guests assembled at the Geological Society in Piccadilly to hear Keith Marshall, the Global Practice Leader for Underground Mining at Rio Tinto, explain the challenges and benefits of block cave mining, in his lecture entitled “Underground Mining – Our Future”.
In an excellently illustrated presentation he covered the principles of block caving and its development at Palabora through to current mines and projects, including
the mega scale Oyu Tolgoi mine in Mongolia.
At the end of the lecture, Valerie Batterham, the MinSouth President, presented a
smiling Keith Marshal with one of the much sought after MinSouth ties.
The highly enjoyable and informative evening was rounded off with a sociable glass of wine and a buffet in the historic library of the Geological Society.
